Structural response of cold-formed lipped Z purlins – Part 2 numerical modelling and optimisation of lip size

This paper reports a numerical study on the optimisation of lip size Z-sections under gravity loads. Numerical models cold-formed steel Z purlins restrained by cladding and angle struts subjected to sagging moment were developed validated against total 8 experimental results that failed in local or/and distortional buckling reported companion paper. Models varying levels complexity generated key parameters affecting structural response determined means sensitivity analysis. The investigated included magnitude, shape combination initial geometric imperfections pertinent simplified or explicit modelling test details such as sheeting. Having appropriate strategy leads best balance between accuracy computational cost, parametric studies conducted investigate effect decreasing increasing depth sections’ resistance corresponding failure mode. Based results, optimal which maximizes weight ratio for each section was determined.
